2023 Magee CARES PilotXTS Pilot - Feasibility and acceptability of pairing xylazine education and home testing as a harm reduction strategy for pregnant and postpartum persons at high-risk of illicit opioid use The goal is to conduct a pilot observational study that couples: 1) patient education on xylazine, xylazine test strips, and strategies to mitigate risk associated with xylazine use delivered to pregnant and postpartum patients in the healthcare setting and 2) distribution of xylazine test strips for home use. The main aims of this study are to understand the feasibility and acceptability of delivering this intervention and explore the provisional effect of this intervention on risk behaviors in the study population. Findings could inform future harm reduction strategies targeted at xylazine exposure and be applied as other contaminants or substances enter the drug supply in the future. Primary Investigator(s) Drs. Ilana Hull, Dr. Margaret Shang, and Raagini Jawa |
2024 Magee CARES PilotPerinatal Sleep and Marijuana Use in Young Pregnant People: A Qualitative StudyThe proposed study aims to explore this potential relationship by hearing from individuals who have used MJ while pregnant to learn about their sleep habits, substance use, pregnancy experience, and perspectives on the intersection between sleep and MJ use. This qualitative study will build upon our preliminary analysis of quantitative sleep data from the broader recruitment pool. A better understanding of this relationship will allow healthcare professionals to best serve pregnant and birthing people by gaining a better understanding of their motivations for cannabis use and lived experiences of marijuana use and sleep during pregnancy. Primary Investigator(s) Dahlia Lehman |

2024 Magee CARES Pilot: POWERPlans of Safe Care Utilization Rates among Pregnant Women with Opioid Use Disorder The goal is to identify and understand the implementation and utilization rates of Plans of Safe Care, across four maternity hospitals within the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) system. Findings from this research will promote improved practices within clinical settings regarding the most effective approaches for developing and implementing Plans of Safe Care and how care plans may improve outcomes for families affected by substance use. Primary Investigator(s): Dr. Kelly DiMattio |
