The development of medications falls short in adequate testing during for women during their reproductive years. That’s where we fill in the gaps. We are evaluating if contraceptives are safe and effective when taken with HIV medications and if hepatitis C medications are safe and effective during pregnancy.

Research in Brief
Dr. Chappell’s research focuses on improving reproductive health outcomes in women living with chronic viral infections, such as HIV or Hepatitis C. She is currently evaluating dose-escalation of the etonogestrel implant in women living with HIV taking efavirenz-based ART in collaboration with the Infectious Disease Institute in Kampala, Uganda. In Pittsburgh, her team is conducting the pharmacokinetic and safety study of ledipasvir and sofosbuvir for hepatitis C treatment during pregnancy.
