One of the most important things I learned here (is that) we have to design products that women like, that leads to them using it as well. That’s where my passion is: to make formulation and drug delivery agents that are more specific to women’s needs and to women’s biology.

Research in Brief
Drug delivery is an integral and most significant part of transforming a new molecular entity into a medication that is safe and efficacious. Developing therapies for women’s health issues requires innovative drug delivery strategies that not only overcome complex and dynamic biological barriers, but also address product development and regulatory challenges to produce a translatable and acceptable product that women are willing to integrate into their lives. Specifically, Dr. Patel is interested in pursuing immune environment in the disease milieu either by directly targeting a specific immune cell type or by modulating other factors such as microbiome, which have a significant role in etiology or progression of diseases such as recurrent endometriosis and infectious diseases. Additionally, he collaborates with the Rohan Pharmaceutics Group, where he is involved with development of novel drug products against HIV, herpes, and unintended pregnancy, as well as developing in vitro tools and models to assess product quality. Dr. Patel’s goal is to address a variety of women health needs using innovative drug delivery and diagnostic solutions that are translatable, affordable, and easy to use.
