Doctors Day 2019: Susan’s story
In 2015, Susan noticed some unusual bumps and bruises on her body, but attributed them to the physical demands of her job. The bruises faded, but the lumps remained. When her local physician suggested she go to Harrisburg for additional testing, Susan instead decided to return home to Pittsburgh.
“I’m from Pittsburgh, the City of Champions, where brilliant medicine is being done. It was time to go home,” Susan said.
At UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, doctors confirmed a Stage 3 breast cancer diagnosis.

“From my first exam, through surgery and the treatments that followed, my Magee team was a source of compassion, acceptance and understanding. My team believed in a cancer-free future for me, and it gave me great confidence,” Susan said.
Today, Susan is cancer-free and thankful for her Magee experience. “How could something so awful end up a good experience for me? The incredible staff and their commitment to me as an individual,” says Susan.
