Learn About Magee-Womens Research Institute's Deep Phenotyping of Pregnancy Project
A new observational research study is enrolling up to 500 women to help learn what makes the difference between a healthy pregnancy and one with complications.
The Deep Phenotyping of Pregnancy Project is an observational research study enrolling up to 500 women. Our team at Magee-Womens Research Institute wants to learn more about healthy pregnancy and how pregnancy complications develop.
The purpose of this study is to construct a blueprint of a healthy pregnancy. To do this, we will observe pregnancy development, noting the changes that take place if a complication develops. These observations will be multiplied by hundreds of study participants to identify patterns in the factors that influence pregnancy.
We will examine the effects of factors like air quality, the microbiome, components of the blood, stress, physical activity, and the father of the baby’s medical history. With this information, researchers may learn ways to prevent complications or guide pregnancy back onto a healthy course.
Study participants will be compensated with a FitBit tracker, up to $275, and bus fare or a parking voucher for each study visit. Click here to see if you qualify.
You are eligible if you are:
- In your first trimester
- 18 or older
- Planning delivery at UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital or Magee-Womens UPMC Hamot
Participants will collect samples and information at home. Study visits can be scheduled to overlap with prenatal appointments.
From home:
- Complete questionnaires
- Wear a Fitbit
- Place an air monitor in the home
- Provide self-collected microbiome samples
At study visits, which can be coordinated with prenatal appointments:
- Blood, urine and hair samples will be collected
- Placenta samples and your baby's first diaper will be collected at delivery
