College Externship and Research Student Training Program (RSTP)
Overview
Magee-Women’s Research Institute (MWRI) strives to offer valuable work experience and training opportunities to undergraduate, graduate, or post-doctoral students in health care and research careers through two student experience programs.
The areas of research for both programs include:
- Development and Regenerative Medicine
- Women’s Cancers
- Gynecology
- Infectious Diseases
- Pregnancy
- Reproductive Physiology, Gonadal Biology, and Fertility
- Women’s Health
MWRI is an independent research institute and is the largest institute in the nation that focuses on reproductive biology, women’s health, and infants’ health.
College Externship Program
Our Externship Program provides practical experience and insight in a particular field of study over a 2-week period. The program is designed for students who will receive academic credit for their participation.
Eligibility
Only students who meet the following criteria will be permitted to participate in the Externship Program:
- The student’s educational institution has a current Student Experience Agreement with UPMC.
- The student is an undergraduate, graduate, or postdoctoral scholar.
- The student must have a sponsoring researcher from within MWRI.
- The student has a letter of support presented to MWRI administration from their educational institution stating they will receive credit for their externship and/or the externship is required as part of their declared program.
- The student has completed all necessary forms through Volunteer Services prior to their start date.
Mentors
The student must arrange an agreement with a researcher from MWRI who will act as his or her mentor. MWRI includes basic, translational, and clinical faculty researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, as well as from other departments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
Research Student Training Program (RSTP)
Our Research Student Training Program enables students to learn the rationale, design strategies, methods, and other aspects of biomedical research, and engage in studies under the direct supervision of experienced researchers.
Eligibility
Students must meet the following criteria to participate in the Research Student Training Program:
- The student is an undergraduate, graduate, or medical student.
- The student must have a sponsoring researcher from within MWRI.
- The student must provide evidence of being academically enrolled.
- The student has completed all necessary forms prior to his or her start date.
- Students participating in the RSTP may not extend beyond 12 months, whether the months are concurrent or across multiple semesters.
Mentors
MWRI includes basic, translational, and clinical faculty researchers from the University of Pittsburgh’s Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, as well as from other departments at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Once accepted into the program, an appropriate mentor will be identified for the student.
